P. S. ( January, 2012 ) When I wrote to foreign ambassadors in Zagreb, around 1995-96, Ambassador Peter W. Galbraith was the only one of them who stated frankly his personal opinion. That is what I appreciate
very much. I also remember that
on some other occasions he acted with more dedication than other ambassadors, diplomats, politicians.... Among his other qualities, I noticed that
he often consented to be present at places which were not safe, but where his presence was necessary. To be in Zagreb during the war was not very safe. A rocket exploded some hundred meters from the US Embassy on Zrinjevac park.... A few years later Peter Galbraith was Director for Political, Constitutional, and Electoral Affairs at
the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). I wrote to somebody
there and asked for Ambassador Galbraith's email address. I received an email,
dated July 30, 2001, from Ms Maria Pasamba, who said: "This refers to your e-mail
message about Mr. Galbraith. For your information, I forwarded your message to him." A few years later I found on the Internet this web-page: http://www.un.org/en/peacekeeping/sites/peacekeepersday/2005/In_Memoriam_2005.pdf "In Memoriam - United Nations - Fallen in the Cause of Peace (......) Tragically,
in this noble endeavour, there are those who make the ultimate sacrifice. (......) "United Nations peacekeepers who lost their lives in the
service of peace, January - December 2004 (......) Maria Pasamba (Philippines) Lost her life on 2 August 2004 - United
Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) (......) "Message from the Secretary-General of the United Nations (......) We at the United Nations have an obligation to honour their memory and build on their legacy. For the sake of those
we mourn today, and those we may mourn tomorrow, let us ensure that we do our utmost to fulfil that duty. Kofi A. Annan". Among the many names
listed at that web-site, fortunately, there was not the name of Peter Galbraith; but I guess he was not safer in East
Timor than in Zagreb or in some other places in Croatia.
